This week class 5c turned their English lesson into a tasty hands-on project: the Trifle Challenge. Pupils learned about the classic British dessert and then made their own variations — from traditional fruit-and-custard trifles to creative modern twists.
In small groups they followed simple recipes to prepare the three main layers: a base of sponge or cake, a middle layer of fresh or preserved fruit, and a creamy topping of custard, cream or pudding.
Each team chose additional flavours and decorations such as chocolate, berries or cookies to create a unique version. While preparing the desserts, pupils practised English vocabulary related to cooking, ingredients and instructions.
The Trifle Challenge was a fun, low-prep way to combine language learning with practical experience. It encouraged speaking, listening and vocabulary use in a relaxed, real-world context — and it ended with a sweet reward for everyone.
Well done, class 5c — and thank you to the parents who helped supply the ingredients!
